It’s open season on Open Streets.

NoHo neighbors apparently are none too thrilled with the Department of Transportation closure of Bond Street, between the Bowery and Lafayette Street. The participating street was formally approved this spring along with a slate of more than 150 others, dozens of which are car-free.

Now, there is a petition to DOT and the Mayor currently circulating the area to end the practice on Bond Street altogether. Citing “serious quality-of-life and safety issues” including an “uptick in loud music and parties on the block.”

The petition also notes that sealing Bond Street proves problematic for mobility-impaired neighbors who require transit services. And will ultimately result in traffic.

A tipster noted that young folks were handing out literature to passersby on consecutive days last week to gain support for the cause.

Yet, the source behind the opposition is unknown – “When my wife or I asked the people collecting signatures who is behind this initiative they refused to tell us,” the tipster notes.
